Exclusive to the Benaki Museum, this facsimile of Yannis Pappas’s sculpture study of a mounted man on a pedestal depicts Georgios Karaiskakis (1985) and is available in a limited, numbered edition.
The original is a study for a mounted statue of Georgios Karaiskakis, which is exhibited at the Benaki Museum / The Yannis Pappas Studio. The study delves into the rendering of the main theme (man on horseback), its placing on a pedestal and the ways in which side views are highlghted. It is based on a 1963 study, with which the artist entered the panhellenic artist competition for a statue of Georgios Karaiskakis in Athens. A mould was created from the plaster original and just fifteen numbered copies in hand-patinated bronze were then hand-cast using the traditional ‘lost wax’ technique in a ceramic shell. This entirely handmade process renders every facsimile unique and was supervised at all stages by the Yannis Pappas Studio.
The collection of limited-edition facsimiles of Yannis Pappas’s works was created for the Benaki Museum Shop in 2021 on the occasion of the Benaki Museum anniversary exhibition 1821 Before and After.
