Exclusive to the Benaki Museum, this facsimile of Yannis Pappas’s sculpture study Mother (1955) is available in a limited, numbered edition.
The original work, currently on show at the Benaki Museum / The Yannis Pappas Studio, is part of a series of studies on the subject of ‘the mother’; the series began in 1955 and was inspired by the birth of the artist’s son. His study of this culminated in the marble sculpture Mother (1959), now in Piraeus. A mould was created from the original plaster sculpture and fifty numbered copies in hand-patinated bronze were then hand-cast using the traditional ‘lost wax’ technique in a ceramic shell. This entirely handmade process renders every facsimile unique and was supervised at all stages by the Yannis Pappas Studio.
This collection of limited-edition facsimiles of Yannis Pappas’s works was created for the Benaki Museum Shop in 2021 on the occasion of the Benaki Museum anniversary exhibition 1821 Before and After.
