The catalogue accompanies the exhibition of the same name, held at the Benaki Museum (Main Building, November 13, 2014 - March 1, 2015) in the context of the events of the “El Greco year”, on the occasion of the quatercentenary of painter’s death. The volume under the scientific editing by art historian Nikos Hadjinikolaou and with texts of his own, as well as Richard Kagan and Ioannis Chassiotis, aims to highlight and honor the intellectuals, collectors and patrons who constituted El Greco's personal close circle in Toledo, inspiring and supporting him throughout his creative journey.
It includes two of the most important portraits created by the artist (from the Museo del Prado), along with other paintings, rare books, manuscripts and engravings of the 16th and 17th centuries that are kept in the National Library of Spain and the Toledo’s Archives, as well as and to other Institutions that willingly agreed to lend their treasures.
