Inscirbed within the diamond-shaped pendant are a pierced cruciform ornament and repousse concentric circles. The original is carved from steatite, a soft stone widely used from Middle Byzantine times for amulets and miniature icons. The piece in the Benaki Museum can be dated to the 11th-12th century.
