Virgin and Child

Hand-painted icon of the Virgin and Child, sheathed in silver, replica of an unusual icon type dating to the 17^th century. The original was made by embossing the copper sheet laid over a bed of soft pitch. Only the faces of the Virgin and Child were painted. Three angelic figures hover among heavy banks of clouds. The panel is surrounded by a border decorated with Late Renaissance motifs.
