Pewter-plated replica of an icon depicting St. George (17th - 18th century). The representation of the saint on horseback spearing the dragon in the jaw was known from the 12th c. onwards. It was particularly popular among craftsmen of the 18th - 19th century, since, according to popular tradition, the slaying of the monster is interpreted as the victory of light over darkness.
