Replica of a 15th century icon of the enthroned Virgin with the infant Christ in her lap. The throne with the inlay decoration, the texture and the coloring of the Virgin's garments as well as the Latin inscriptions indicate that the icon was made according to the traditional late-gothic art of Italy. The two figures, whose sweetness and imperceptible melancholy are rendered in a pure Byzantine traditional technique, reveal the skill of the Cretan painters of the 15th century, who were capable to produce icons for the religious needs of their Greek and Italian clientele. The reproduction is hand-crafted by the artist and icon painter George Bogdanopoulos according to the technique used by Byzantine painters, that is, in egg-tempera combined with earth colours and with polished pure gold leaf.
