The subject is derived from the decoration of a mid-5th century red-figure skyphos from an Attic workshop, which depicts an owl standing between two olive branches. The owl and the olive are the pre-eminent symbols of goddess Athena, patroness of Athens, and are represented on a large number of Attic works, the most characteristic of which are vases and Athenian coins.
