Reproduction of an icon with the Christ the Great Archpriest from the Velimezis Collection. The original can be assigned to the artistic production of a conservative anonymous painter of the beginning of the 17th century, who is following lavishly the tradition of the great Cretan masters of the 15th century. The depiction of Christ in ecclesiastical garments is derived from representations of the Palaiologan era and was one of the popular subjects in Cretan painting after the fall of Constantinople. The reproduction is hand-crafted by the artist and icon painter George Bogdanopoulos according to the technique used by Byzantine painters, that is, in egg-tempera combined with earth colours and with polished pure gold leaf.
