The publication constitutes the catalogue of the exhibition under the same title which has been organized by the Benaki Museum, the French School at Athens and the Musée Zervos (Vézelay) and hosted at the Benaki Museum 138 Pireos st. from December 12, 2019 until March 1, 2020. The texts of the catalogue and the unpublished archival material illustrate the “archaic turn” of Cahiers d’Art and modern art, proposed by Zervos, as a position against the historicism and dominance of the classical, document the importance of the Cahiers d’Art editions for the redefinition of ancient cultures and archaic forms in the context of modernism and explore the wider context of invention and perception of “mediterranean primitivism” by the proponents of modern art.
