The central motif of the box is derived from a Roman hematite amulet. The winged figures locked in an embrace are identified as Eros and Psyche, the heroes of Apulius’ symbolic short story of the same name (2nd-1st century BC). Very popular in Antiquity, this work narrates god Eros’ love for the mortal Psyche, which finally triumphs after many trials and tribulations. 2nd-3rd century AD.
