Ceramic replica of a lamp from Egypt (3rd century). The original is a variant of the well-known iconographic type of the gold and ivory Virgin Athena sculpted by Pheidias for the Parthenon in the 5th century BC. With the encouragement of the Roman emperors the worship of Athena was particularly widespread in Egypt as indicated by the numerous coins bearing her image.
