In this text, originally presented in Athens in 2014 at the ‘Numismatic Encounters - Chremata kai archai’ seminar, the renowned numismatist François de Callataÿ delves into the question of beauty in ancient Greek coins, referring to Plotinus and Longinus as well as later intellectuals (Winckelmann, Goethe et al.). Evaluation is not only based on aesthetic terms but also on technical and factual analysis in the fields of numismatics and art history. This is the first of the Memoranda Numismatica Atheniensia series of yearly publications, the result of a synergy between the Benaki Museum and the Welfare Foundation for Social and Cultural Affairs (KIKPE).
