This volume brings together the extended version of the papers presented at the academic conference organized by the Benaki Museum to honor the photographer, held on 13–14 May 2023, alongside the major exhibition ‘Nelly’s. The Work of Photographer Elli Sougioultzoglou Seraidari 1899–1998’, which took place that same year and was curated by Aliki Tsirgialou. In this volume, historians and theorists of photography, alongside researchers specialized in twentieth-century history and Greek culture, offer diverse perspectives on the study of the photographer’s multifaceted work, its place within the political and cultural context of her era, and its role in the development of the art of photography; they also undertake critical assessments of Nelly’s contribution in the light of twenty-first-century theoretical and epistemological considerations.
