Benaki Crafts: Fragile Craftsmanship

Benaki Crafts

29, February 2024

For decades, the Benaki Museum Shop has been at the forefront of Greek craftsmanship, celebrating and preserving master handcrafting skills, traditions and passions. Fragile Craftsmanship, as part of the exhibition series Benaki Crafts, which was inaugurated in 2021, embodies this vision in the most tangible way.

On the occasion of the exhibition Nikos Alexiou: The Collection, at the building of Pireos St. 138, showcasing contemporary works of Greek and foreign artists from the multifaceted collection that he donated to the Benaki Museum just before his death, the Benaki shop presents a curated collection of objects that share common characteristics with Alexiou’s work.

With materials such as paper, wood, metal, clay and fabric, ten artists with their own personal imprint and rare craft skills, interact and “reflect” upon textures, the interweaving of webs and grids, the obsession with paper, the preference for the transparency, the traces of the past and the delicate balance between order and disorder.

It is a bold collective window display inspired by the creative universe of Nikos Alexiou, a prominent artist who redefined the artistic practices in Greece, in the turning point of the 21st century.
