Material Quests

23, June 2022

The Benaki Museum Shop presents the exhibition of Elli Xippa, winner of the 2019 “Material Quests” award; presented during Athens Jewelry Week to artists, whose work is characterized by exceptional aesthetics, superb craftsmanship and particular artistic inspiration. The exhibition takes place at the Shop of the Benaki Museum / Pireos 138.

Artist statement:

“I am excited about this opportunity, as I love to research. Having worked as a designer of women’s clothing, I recently started designing fine jewellery. It fascinates me to discover new ways in which to transform materials and use them in jewelry making. The collection “Trapped on the seabed”, for which I received the award, is the continuation of the “Crawling in the depths” collection. I used tights for both collections, which were processed, hardened, moulded and shaped, in order to adorn a body.

Towards the end of the pandemic, I introduced a third collection titled “Coming out of the darkness”, works from which are also included in my exhibition. Feeling the need to explore new paths, I started experimenting with potatoes, until I finally succeeded in transforming them into jewellery. The outcome of this work took part in the group exhibition “Briam” and today, I have the pleasure to present it alongside my previous collections.

My one goal is to stimulate the imagination of others, as well as myself’s. To inspire an interest in a never-ending exploration. What a dreamy life jewellery offer us!”
