Material Quests

19, May 2023

The Benaki Museum Shop presents Joanna Grigoriou's exhibition “Homage” at the Shop of Pireos 138, as part of the series "Material Quests”.

Artist statement:

"I am a maker. Materials are my inspiration.

I work with my hands; my fingers become tools. Using non-precious materials, each piece gains its “value” from the work applied to it. By pushing the boundaries of their properties, materials take on new identities.

My practice has been expressed through a wide range of media and scale. Influenced by architecture and organic forms my work expresses both the logical and fragile self. This ambivalence is revealed through the delicate materials that contrast the ‘strict’ framework supporting it.

Repetitive acts recite moments lost in time, transforming the rhythm of the hands into objects. Empathy with materials and the making process, a slowing down of time through making and gestural repetition are all expressions of my identity as a maker.

My current work, although still employing structures, is changing scale. No longer concerned with small sculptures which inhabit the body but sculptures which contain it, I intend to develop the concept of wearable jewellery further."

Joanna Grigoriou, 1992, holds a Bachelor's in Contemporary Jewellery from Alchimia, Florence. Her initial studies were as an architect at the University of Nottingham, UK.
