Alchemies • Vanessa Anastasopoulou

Kriezotou 3 Window

06, October 2023

The collection of ceramic objects presented by visual artist Vanessa Anastasopoulou as part of the exhibition series "Kriezotou 3 Window. An Artist Exhibits" combines the ritual with the sculptural element, a dichotomy that distinguishes the creator's work as a whole.

Impressive vessels in a variety of forms, the ceramics in this collection compose imaginary microcosms crafted with an exhausting attention to detail and reflect our fragile and uncertain existence, raising questions about our passage through space and time.

Each object forms a sculptural ensemble that evokes nature and the cycle of life. Organic elements such as flowers, branches, leaves and eggshells are incorporated into clay or porcelain and, as they are fired in the kiln, leave fragile imprints on them, highlighting the unexpected possibilities resulting from a continuous, living conversation between art, nature and craftsmanship.

Multiple firings, gradual layering by scraping, grinding and peeling, as well as the adhesion of natural elements create a textured mapping on the vessels through a paleontological-style storytelling process.

"Against the all-embracing vulgarity, we become magicians", comments Vanessa Anastastopoulou in the Homo Faber Guide online community, where she also belongs. "We find refuge in alchemies, we create unreal worlds by changing and transforming the known. We surprise even ourselves.", concludes the artist.

Having studied at the Wimbledon School of Art (BA. Hons) and the Royal College of Art (MA. Painting), Vanessa Anastasopoulou started practicing ceramics during the economic crisis in Greece, in search of a different medium in her artistic expression. Drawing, painting and sculpture meet ceramic art in Vanessa's dreamy creations, describing a completely personal artistic idiom beyond categorization.

Her visual work has been exhibited in individual and group exhibitions in Greece (Gallery 7, Zoumboulakis Galleries, Martinos Gallery, Benaki Museum) and abroad (England, Belgium, Japan, Lithuania, South Korea). She represented Greece at the European Ceramic Context 2018, in Bornholm, Denmark. Her works belong to the public collections of Deutsche Bank, British Airways, Aylesford Newsprint, and are recommended by the Michelangelo Foundation guide, Homo Faber, in which Vanessa participates as a Master Artisan.
